Can your content writer do AEO?

You already pay someone to write. Whether that covers AI search depends entirely on which half of the work you mean.

Table of contents

Key takeaways

  • Writing quality matters. Engines assemble answers from passages, and a clean self-contained paragraph outperforms a beautiful essay.
  • But volume does not work here. Publishing more of your own pages does not fix a problem caused by an absence of third-party sources.
  • The most common failure is invisible: a year of good writing, no citations, and no instrument pointed at the right surface.
  • If your writer also does outreach and owns the technical floor, that is a full AEO function under a different job title.
  • Judge it by whether an engine quotes you, not by whether the content is good. Those are different questions.

The half a writer genuinely covers

AI answers are assembled from passages. An engine pulls a self-contained chunk of text that answers the question and can stand alone once lifted out of the page. This is a writing skill, and it is not the same skill as writing an engaging article.

The pages that get quoted tend to share a shape: they answer the question in the first paragraph rather than building to it, they define terms in place instead of assuming the earlier context, and they make claims in complete sentences that survive being extracted. A strong writer who understands this will outperform a specialist agency that does not know your category.

If your writer already writes this way, or can be shown how in an afternoon, that part of AEO is genuinely handled.

The half that publishing cannot solve

Here is the structural problem. Engines discount what you say about yourself. When an engine names three companies in an answer, it is leaning on sources that are not those companies: editorial roundups, comparison articles, review platforms, forum threads.

That means if the reason you are absent is that nobody independent writes about you, then more of your own content does not address the cause. You can publish fifty excellent pages and stay invisible, which is exactly the outcome that makes teams conclude AI search does not work.

The work that fixes it is outreach and placement: getting into the lists other people maintain. It is a different job, it is uncomfortable, and it is the piece most in-house content functions do not have.

The other things a writer usually does not own

  • The technical floor. If AI crawlers are blocked at your CDN, or pages render client-side so a crawler sees an empty shell, nothing written will be read. This fails silently.
  • Entity clarity. Consistent naming, schema, and a resolvable identity across the web. Engines hedge on companies they cannot pin down, and hedging usually means omission.
  • Correcting what already exists. A stale price or an old positioning line on a third-party page becomes the sentence a buyer reads. Fixing it means contacting the publisher, not writing a rebuttal.
  • Measurement. Rankings and traffic do not tell you whether an engine named you. Knowing requires asking the engines directly, repeatedly, and recording what came back.

How to tell whether it is working

This is the part most teams get stuck on, and the uncertainty is usually what prompts the question in the first place. Content quality is easy to assess and almost irrelevant to the outcome. The only honest test is whether an engine quotes you.

Do this monthly and it takes under an hour.

  1. Write down ten questions a buyer would ask who does not know your brand yet.
  2. Ask each in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Mode.
  3. Record which companies are named, and where the answer sourced them from.
  4. Note whether you appear, and if you do, whether what is said is accurate and current.
  5. Keep the record. One month is a snapshot. Three months is a trend you can act on.

When a writer is the right answer

  • You are already cited but described badly. That is a content and accuracy problem, and writing fixes it.
  • Your pages are strong but unquotable. Restructuring existing content for retrieval is fast, cheap, and squarely a writing job.
  • Your category is small and you know it deeply. Context beats technique more often than specialists admit.
  • Your writer will also do outreach. Then you have an AEO function; the title is just different.

When it is not

  • You are absent everywhere. Absence is usually a third-party problem, and publishing does not touch it.
  • Nothing has changed in six months of publishing. More of the same input will not produce a different output.
  • Nobody is measuring citations. Then you do not yet know whether it is working, which is a different problem from it not working.
  • The technical floor is broken. Fix that first. It is a sprint, not a retainer, and everything else depends on it.

The practical answer

Keep the writer. Add measurement first, because it is cheap and it tells you which problem you actually have. If the answer comes back that you are absent rather than badly described, the gap is third-party placement, and that is the thing to solve next, whether internally or not.

If you would rather see the measurement before deciding anything, the free AEO report covers exactly that ground.

Frequently asked questions

Can a content writer handle AEO on their own?

They can handle the writing half well, which is real and matters. What usually falls outside the role is third-party placement, entity and technical work, and measuring what changed inside an AI answer. Whether that is a gap depends on why you are absent.

Will publishing more content get us cited by ChatGPT?

Not if the reason you are absent is that no third party mentions you. Engines discount self-published description, so volume on your own domain does not address that cause. If you are already cited but described poorly, more and better content does help.

How is AEO writing different from SEO writing?

AEO writing optimises for extraction rather than for ranking. The page needs paragraphs that answer the question completely and stand alone when lifted out of context. Good SEO writing often builds to its point, which makes it harder to quote.

How long before we know if the writing is working?

Start recording engine answers now and you will see directional movement within a quarter. Without that record you can publish for a year and have no way to tell, which is the most common situation teams find themselves in.

Should we hire a specialist writer for AI search?

Usually not as a first move. It is cheaper to show your existing writer how retrieval works and to add measurement, then see whether the gap is writing at all. Frequently it is not.
