Where the overlap is real

Five workstreams produce results in both disciplines and should never be siloed.

  • Schema markup. Organization, Service, Person, FAQPage, Article, Product, BreadcrumbList. Both Google and AI engines parse it.
  • Page speed and Core Web Vitals. Google still rewards them. AI engines that crawl the open web (Perplexity, Claude) reward them too.
  • Internal linking. Hub-and-spoke architecture. Same benefit on both sides.
  • Author entity signals. Person schema with knowsAbout, alumniOf, sameAs, image. Helps SEO E-E-A-T and AEO citation entity matching equally.
  • Sitemap and robots.txt hygiene. AI bot allow-lists (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, OAI-SearchBot) are the AEO-specific addition. Otherwise identical work.

Where they actually diverge

Three workstreams are AEO-specific and have no SEO analogue. These are what most agencies skip when they bolt AEO onto a classic SEO offering.

  1. Listicle PR. Pitching to be included in third-party "best of" lists. Quoleady March 2026 data: 40 to 72 percent of LLM citations originate from listicles. Backlink agencies do not run this workstream.
  2. Reddit thread participation. Founder-led, never anonymous, never astroturfed. Reddit citation share grew roughly 73 percent on Perplexity in tech categories between late 2025 and early 2026.
  3. Weekly citation measurement. Prompt-based monitoring across five engines. SEO agencies measure organic ranking in Google. AEO agencies measure citations in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.

Common questions

Should I do AEO instead of SEO?

No. The technical foundation is shared. Google AI Overviews source from organic results. ChatGPT Search runs on Bing's organic index. Skip SEO and you cut the foundation out from under AEO. Do both, as one engagement.

Is keyword research still relevant?

Yes, with one shift. Classic keyword research targets head terms and short tails ranked by search volume. AEO research expands into fan-out queries, the long, conversational, intent-loaded prompts buyers actually type into chatbots. ANTE generates fan-out queries from seed topics as part of every onboarding.

How does backlink building change?

Backlinks still matter for classic SEO. For AEO, brand mentions (cited without a link) correlate roughly 3x more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks (Ahrefs December 2025 study, 75,000 brands). The shift is from "earn a link" to "earn a mention." Listicle inclusion, podcasts, and named-author content earn mentions whether or not they link.

Does content length still matter?

For AEO, passage quality matters more than total word count. AI engines retrieve passages, not pages. ANTE writes in 400 to 512 token blocks (Mike King Relevance Engineering chunk size) so each passage is independently citable.

Want both, run as one engagement?

ANTE runs SEO and AEO as a single retainer. $6,000/month. 90-day minimum, then month-to-month.
